iPhone Duo emergency SOS via satellite and other off-grid features
Emergency SOS, Messages, Find My and Roadside Assistance via satellite: what iPhone Duo can do when you have no signal.

iPhone Duo includes Apple's full set of satellite features. Here is what each one does and how to make sure it will work before you need it.
The satellite features on iPhone Duo
- Emergency SOS via satellite: if you try calling 911 without cell service or Wi-Fi, you can text emergency services over satellite.
- Messages via satellite: send and receive messages off the grid from the Messages app.
- Find My via satellite: share your location with friends and family when you have no coverage.
- Roadside Assistance via satellite: get help with things like a flat tire or dead battery, sent to your location.
- Crash Detection: sensors and motion algorithms can detect a severe car crash and call for help if you cannot.
How to prepare before a trip
- Try the demo in Settings (search for "Satellite") so you know how to aim the phone.
- Update your Medical ID and emergency contacts in the Health app.
- Share your location with someone in Find My before you leave.
- Charge fully. Satellite connections take longer and need a clear view of the sky.
How to use it
When there is no signal, iPhone Duo guides you to point the phone at the satellite. Stay outdoors with a clear view of the sky, away from trees and buildings. Messages are slower than normal texts.
Availability
Satellite features depend on your country and may require a subscription after any included period. Check Apple's current terms for your region.
