Virtual Front Camera and camera continuity across iPhone Duo's two displays
iPhone Duo has two displays and more than two cameras. Here is how Apple's new camera APIs keep existing front-camera code working without a rewrite.
Virtual Front Camera
According to what we have seen documented, the centerpiece is something Apple calls the Virtual Front Camera. It lets existing front-camera code — the kind that has shipped in FaceTime, camera, and video-calling apps for years — automatically switch between the outer and inner physical cameras depending on which display is currently active, without the app needing to be rewritten to handle the distinction explicitly.
That is a meaningful decision on Apple's part: rather than requiring every video-calling and camera app on the App Store to add iPhone Duo-specific camera-selection logic, the system absorbs that complexity and existing apps inherit correct behavior automatically.
Direction-aware coordination
For apps that do need more control, AVCaptureDeviceDirectionCoordinator handles direction-aware coordination — deciding things like mirroring and facing correctly depending on which camera is active and which display the user is looking at. This is the API layer you would reach for if Virtual Front Camera's automatic behavior is not quite right for your specific capture flow.
Outer-display camera UI
For apps that want to show capture controls on the outer display while recording — a common pattern for anyone using iPhone Duo folded, since the outer display becomes the visible screen — Apple has published CameraCaptureAccessory, exposed through scene accessories, specifically for placing camera UI there.
Why this matters beyond video calling
Our PromptSlate Studio app leans on exactly this category of API to keep a live camera preview and recording controls available regardless of how the device is positioned — see our PromptSlate Studio writeup for how that's used in practice. If you are building anything with a camera feature on iPhone Duo, Virtual Front Camera and its related APIs are worth understanding before you write any device-specific capture logic of your own — much like the guidance on adaptive layouts, the theme here is: let the system handle device-specific behavior wherever it can.
